How to add grain to images online

  1. 1Upload your images by clicking the upload area or dragging and dropping files
  2. 2Choose a grain type from the dropdown (Gaussian for natural film grain)
  3. 3Adjust the grain amount slider to control noise intensity
  4. 4Preview the grain effect in real-time
  5. 5Choose your preferred output format and download

Frequently Asked Questions

What is film grain and why would I add it?

Film grain is a texture caused by the random distribution of silver halide crystals in analog film. Adding digital grain can give photos a vintage, cinematic, or artistic look, add texture to flat digital images, or help blend composited elements together.

What's the difference between the grain types?

Gaussian produces natural-looking film grain with a bell-curve distribution. Uniform creates evenly distributed noise. Impulse adds salt-and-pepper specks. MultiplicativeGaussian creates intensity-dependent grain (brighter areas get more noise). Laplacian and Poisson offer mathematical noise distributions used in scientific imaging.

Which grain type looks most like real film?

Gaussian is the closest to real analog film grain and is the default. For a more pronounced vintage look, try MultiplicativeGaussian which mimics how film grain varies with exposure. Use lower amounts (10-30) for subtle grain and higher amounts (50+) for dramatic effects.

Does this tool support animated images?

Yes! This tool fully supports animated GIFs, animated WebP, and APNG files. All frames in the animation will have grain applied while preserving the animation timing and quality.

What image formats are supported?

You can add grain to images in AVIF, Animated PNG (APNG), BMP, GIF, HEIC/HEIF, ICO (Icon), JPE, JPG, JPG (JPEG), MP4 (Video), PBM, PGM, PNG, PNG 24-bit, PNG 32-bit, PNG 8-bit, PNM, PPM, PSD, RAW formats (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, ORF, RAF, etc.), SVG, TGA (Targa), TIFF, WebP, XCF. Output formats include AVIF, BMP, GIF, JPG (JPEG), PNG, SVG, TIFF, WebP.

Are my photos safe?

Absolutely! All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly technology. Your images are never uploaded to any server - they stay completely private on your device.

Can I add grain to multiple images at once?

Yes! Upload multiple images, preview the grain effect, and download them all individually or as a ZIP file. The same grain settings are applied to all images simultaneously.

Is there a file size or quantity limit?

No, there are no file size or quantity restrictions. All processing happens locally in your browser, so larger files or batches may take longer depending on your device's performance.
