MOV to AVIF Converter

Convert MOV videos from your iPhone, iPad or Mac into animated AVIF files. The result keeps the motion of your recording at a small fraction of the size of a GIF, and the conversion happens entirely in your browser without uploading anything.

Allowed Filetypes: All image formats (JPG, PNG, TIFF, RAW, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Which video formats does this tool accept?

It is built for MOV files, the QuickTime format used by iPhones, iPads and Macs, and it also reads MP4, WebM and other common video files. Everything is processed locally in your browser.

Do iPhone videos work?

Yes. Recordings from the iPhone camera app are MOV files and convert directly. Both H.264 recordings and the newer HEVC recordings are supported in current desktop browsers. If a specific file cannot be decoded, the tool falls back to a slower built-in decoder rather than failing.

Why convert a MOV to AVIF instead of a GIF?

Size and quality. A GIF is limited to 256 colors and stores every frame as a complete image, which makes screen recordings and camera footage huge. AVIF compresses the differences between frames in full color, so the same clip is regularly up to 90% smaller and looks noticeably cleaner.

Where does animated AVIF play?

In all current browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. macOS shows animated AVIFs in Preview and Quick Look too. For very old software that only shows the first frame, keep a GIF or WebP version as a fallback.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is decoded and converted on your own device using the browser's built-in video hardware where available. Nothing is sent to a server, which keeps private recordings private and avoids upload time entirely.

How do I keep the file small?

Trim with the maximum length setting, lower the frame rate to 12 or 15 fps, and reduce the width if the original is 4K or 1080p. A 480 to 800 pixel wide AVIF at 12 fps is usually more than sharp enough for chat messages and websites.

Can I make the animation play only once?

Yes. The AVIF loops forever by default, like a GIF would. Untick the loop option in the animation settings if you prefer a single playthrough.
