MP4 to AVIF Converter

Turn MP4 videos into animated AVIF files right in your browser. AVIF keeps the motion of your clip at a fraction of the file size of a GIF, and nothing gets uploaded because the whole conversion runs on your device.

Allowed Filetypes: All image formats (JPG, PNG, TIFF, RAW, etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Which video formats can I convert to AVIF?

MP4 works best, but the converter also reads MOV, WebM and most other common video files. The video is decoded and re-encoded directly in your browser, so there is no server queue and no file size billing.

What is an animated AVIF, and why is it so much smaller than a GIF?

AVIF is a modern image format built on the AV1 video codec. Unlike GIF, which stores every frame as a full picture with at most 256 colors, AVIF stores only what changes between frames and uses full color. In our tests the same clip came out up to 90% smaller as an AVIF than as a GIF, with visibly better quality.

Will the animation actually play everywhere?

Animated AVIF plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, so you can use it on websites just like a GIF. On macOS, Preview and Quick Look show it animated as well. Some older image viewers only display the first frame, which is a good reason to keep a GIF fallback for very old software.

How do I control quality and file size?

You have four levers: the quality slider, the frame rate, a maximum length in seconds and the output dimensions. Lowering the frame rate to 12 or 15 fps usually cuts the size a lot without making the motion feel choppy. The max length setting is handy when you only need the first few seconds of a clip.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs completely inside your browser using your own hardware. Your video never leaves your device, which also means there is no upload wait and no size limit imposed by a server.

Can I decide whether the AVIF loops?

Yes. By default the animation repeats forever, like a GIF. If you want it to play through just once, untick the loop option in the animation settings before converting.

When should I pick AVIF over WebP or GIF?

Pick AVIF when file size matters most, for example for website graphics, previews and short screen recordings. Animated WebP is a middle ground with wider support in older browsers. GIF is only worth it when you need to paste the file into an app that accepts nothing else.
